Paul Peschisolido Feature

Paul Peschisolido is not concerned with labels, so he doesn't mind being known as St Patrick's Athletic's number two.

The 37-year-old is taking his first steps into professional management by linking up with Jeff Kenna to take charge of The Super Saints for the 2009 season.

After enjoying a long playing career that saw him take in spells with Birmingham City, Fulham, Sheffield United, and Derby County, he called it quits after picking up an Achilles injury when playing for Luton Town.

While he was known as a fox-in-the-box type striker, Peschisolido is now attempting to alter his reputation by adding coaching achievements to his impressive CV.

"I'm really excited to be at this club. I was hoping that an opportunity like this would come along and I'm delighted to be working with Jeff," Peschisolido told setanta.com in an exclusive interview.

The former Canadian international admits that he was shocked to be asked by Kenna to join him at Richmond Park, although this arrangement had been discussed a few years ago.

When the pair were plying their trade for Derby County, they regularly spoke about tactics, training, and everything else that would need to be controlled when they eventually stepped into management.

"I was surprised to get the call from him," he confessed.
"We spent a lot of time together when I was at Derby as we used to travel into training every day together. We spoke a lot about what we would do and how we would do things if we ever went into coaching.

"A lot of it was tongue-in-cheek back then. But Jeff called me up and said that this was our chance to put it all into practice and it was hard to say no to him.

"Now it is time to put the plan into action."

Some people might have thought that Peschisolido would look to start learning his trade as a coach/assistant manager at a more high profile club, but he believes that beginning at a more modest level will allow him to learn a lot more very quickly.

Having already got his Uefa B Licence, he was due to take the A Licence course in England before the St Pat's job cropped up. He will look to switch that over to Ireland now as he continues his climb up the coaching ladder.

One of the main traits that comes across when speaking to him is how geninue he is when answering questions. There is no inflated ego suggesting that he demands respect nor is there even a hint of jealously that Kenna is the number one that will get the spotlight.

"Both of us want success and we want to achieve things in management, so it doesn't really matter who is the number one and who is the number two," he stated.

"Names and titles, like being an assistant manager or a number two, never really bothered me. I just want to help out as best I can and ensure that the club is successful.

"I'm sure Jeff has the knowledge of defending and he knows what he wants from his team in that respect, while I can hopefully bring something to the attacking side. We are both excited about this opportunity."

Pesch, as he is known in football circles, freely speaks about the ambitions that he now has as a number two, although he is trying not to look beyond this season with St Pat's.

However, he hasn't dismissed the possibility of going into management himself further down the line.

"Who knows? he chirps when quizzed about whether he will one day become a first-team manager.

"At the minute, I'm really going to enjoy this role. I've a lot to learn and am very ambitious, so I'm going to use this opportunity to do the best that I can."
